CANORA – River Ridge Fish & Game League President Kate Lockert and former president Kathy Thomas attended the 97th Annual Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Convention in Yorkton from Feb. 12-14.
One of the much anticipated events at each convention is the Parade of Cheques, where SWF branches from all over the province present the SWF with donations towards the various programs encompassed by the organization.
This year, River Ridge had the privilege to donate another $5,000 to the Habitat Trust Program, bringing their donations this far to $92,752.
When asked, "Why Habitat Trust?" River Ridge president Kate Lockert shared the following response: "Have you ever wondered why there are so many different animals in town, or other urban areas? It’s because they have lost their homes. They come to town because it is their last safe haven where they can find food and shelter. One of the University of Regina students that spoke at the convention, made a statement that really stuck with me." Lockert continued.
"The smallest action can create the biggest reaction. Knocking down an acre of trees may not seem like a big deal, but the reaction is astronomical and devastating to so many animals, from moose right down to the microbes that live in the soil. River Ridge prides itself in being able to donate towards this program so that SWF can continue to secure lands where future generations have places they can see animals, birds and just a diversity of plants as well. I could go on for hours about the importance of habitat but will stop there."
River Ridge’s small action of donating to Habitat Trust helps make it possible for the SWF to create the greatest reaction.
“In 2027, River Ridge will hit a milestone donation of $100,000,” said Lockert. “It may not seem like a lot, but it ties into the SWF motto: To ensure the wildlife legacy we leave our children surpasses that which we inherited.”
