CANORA – After last year’s event where organizers had to deal with temperatures in the neighbourhood of -30℃, the 2026 Valentine’s Day Tea and Bake Sale held at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Feb. 14 took place on a pleasant winter day, with temperatures only a few degrees south of the freezing mark.
A total of 81 adults and six children were in attendance, according to Liz Bahnuik, St. Joseph’s communications representative.
“This was the largest gathering we've had in recent history with guests travelling from Rama, Invermay, Good Spirit Acres, Sturgis, Crystal Lake and the surrounding areas,” said Bahnuik. “For many attending, it was their first time and they were delighted to be served in bone china tea cups and saucers, a practice from times past and rarely seen anymore. Dainty pinwheel sandwiches and sweets were served to compliment the fine china.”
Bahnuik said the Bucket Draws were a major attraction for the afternoon with more than 50 prizes donated by local merchants, businesses, and some individuals.
“St. Joseph's parishioners donated a huge variety of baked goods to compliment the bake sale table which is always a must to visit before leaving.”
Homemade baking available during the bake sale included: cinnamon buns, brownies, bread, cakes, cupcakes and tarts.
“Lots of old friends were able to get together for a visit and catching up after a long and very cold winter,” Bahnuik.
“The room was decorated in red hearts with pretty mini-lights set on crisp white table cloths provided by Joan Kowalyshyn as an appropriate setting for a Valentine’s Tea!
“The afternoon was considered a success by those in attendance.”
