The Swan Valley Stampeders closed out their regular season Wednesday night with a 4-1 loss to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in Swan River — in a game that featured plenty of edge.
Waywayseecappo opened the scoring 8:30 into the first, as Sebastian Hicks wired a slapshot past Samuel Bastien for his 31st of the season to make it 1-0. Just 1:23 later, Ben Roulette struck on the power play, beating Bastien to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead after one.
The intensity ramped up in the second period, highlighted by a mini line brawl that escalated into a rare goalie fight between Bastien and Wolverines netminder Jase Wareham — a spark that brought the crowd to life but didn’t shift the momentum on the scoreboard.
Noah Oughton extended the Wolverines’ lead later in the middle frame, finishing a slick setup from Treycen Wuttunee to make it 3-0 through 40 minutes.
The Stampeders pushed back early in the third, as Trace Langan cut the deficit to 3-1 with a strong individual effort just three minutes in. But Max Collyer answered five minutes later, capitalizing on a turnover and beating Easton Falls to restore the three-goal cushion and round out the scoring.
With the win, Waywayseecappo clinched a playoff berth. The Stampeders now turn their attention to Friday night in Niverville against the league-leading Niverville Nighthawks, while the Wolverines visit the Nighthawks on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the MJHL, the Steinbach Pistons defeated the Selkirk Steelers 6-2, and the Nighthawks rolled past the Portage Terriers 9-1.
