KELVINGTON — Choosing to be a rural veterinarian has its challenges but also reaps extra rewards. Heidi Dubé, has always loved being around animals, from large to small, but never started out wanting to go into the profession.
Originally from Sylvia Lake, Alta, she started off playing and teaching music in high school and later worked in a music studio, instructing piano, guitar and voice. She took a break from teaching music to become a certified massage therapist. She soon learned that massage therapy was not for her. She made the decision to enroll in a two-year pre-requisite course for veterinary medicine.
Heidi and her husband, Paul, moved to Saskatoon from Alberta, then to the family farm in Kelvington. She spent the next four years travelling back and forth to Saskatoon for classes. After her convocation in 2015, she worked for the Gateway Veterinary Services for three years, learning and gaining valuable experience, all while she and her husband expanded their family unit with children.
In 2024, she began the process of adding to the couple’s family farm by establishing her own business. The main office consists of a renovated oil field bunkhouse. For the most part, she works out of her truck, offering all mobile services right to the agricultural producers' barn. She provides services for both large and small animals. She is accompanied by two experienced vet techs who help run a smooth operation.
“We understand the importance of keeping your animals healthy, whether they are beloved pets, valuable livestock, or working horses. With a strong focus on client education, we aim to empower pet and livestock owners with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their animals’ health,” said Dubé.
With over a decade of experience in veterinary medicine, Dr. Heidi brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for animal care to every appointment. Her qualifications include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Heidi’s approach to veterinary medicine is rooted in compassion and understanding. She takes the time to get to know each animal and their owner, ensuring that every treatment plan is tailored to the specific needs of her patients. Her experience spans routine check-ups and vaccinations to complex surgical procedures and advanced sheep/goat reproductive services. Whether she’s caring for a family pet or managing the health of a herd, Dr. Heidi is known for her commitment to the well-being of all animals under her care.
Her facilities are located north of Kelvington on Highway 38 on the family farm. Current facilities include a 60-foot well-site trailer that can accommodate a full range of small-animal services, from vaccines to medical appointments and surgery.
The family farm is also home to a 300 sheep operation, as well as home to working horses, border collie dogs, and a variety of other pets.
