CANORA – The Canora Cobras hosted a successful Major Hockey League U9 C & D playoff tournament on March 7-8.
The host team played three games, all on the first day of the tournament, with one win and two losses.
“We played great,” said Cobras Coach Parker Rice. “We focused on playing our positions, getting pucks to the net and trying to score off of rebounds.”
Canora’s first game was a 7-4 win over Ochapowace First Nation.
That set up a game against the Esterhazy Flyers, the eventual C champions. The back-and-forth contest had the two teams tied at 1-1 early on. But the Flyers gradually pulled away, taking leads of 4-3 and 8-4 before building the final score to 9-5.
In what turned out to be their final game of the playoffs, the Cobras were defeated 10-7 by Whitewood White, who lost to Esterhazy in the C championship game.
In the D final, Whitewood Black won over Ochapowace FN.
“It was a very fun weekend,” said Coach Rice. “We didn’t make it to the finals like we had hoped but we battled hard and we couldn’t be more proud of the kids.”
The playoff tournament was the last competitive action for the U9 Cobras this season, but they will still be getting back on the ice in a more casual atmosphere before the hockey season ends.
“We have a couple weeks remaining for some fun practices and a parents versus kids game which is always a blast,” said Coach Rice.
