STURGIS — Skate Sturgis, a newly formed skating group, held its second-ever ice carnival on Feb. 28 and March 1. The theme of the program featured Dance the Ice Away, with 60 skaters lighting up the ice with their performances. Heather Tunbridge-Jaeb was the mentor and coaches were Mollie Jaeb, Layla Jaeb, Karley Buchinski and Cruz Jaeb. The junior coaches were Adley Ward, Sage Ward and Jayden Poworoznyk-Bates.
Skate Sturgis offered lessons for beginners, intermediates and advanced skaters, as well as parent-and-toddler skating.
The learn-to-skate program provided skaters the opportunity to develop and learn to skate in a fun environment. The motto is about going back to the basics, learning to skate and providing skaters with fundamentals and skills to progress in a fun, safe environment.
The program kicked off with the playing of O Canada and the Skater’s Prayer, followed by a coach skate by Mollie Jaeb, Layla Jaeb, Karley Buchinski and Cruz Jaeb to the music Dancing in the Country.
Novice 3/extreme skaters Katie Boucher, Erza Parreno, Paisley Boucher and Kiara Poworoznyk-Bates skated to the music Dancing with Myself.
Jayden Poworoznyk-Bates skated a solo to the music Everybody Dance Now.
Beginner/elementary skaters Ava Nelson, Brynn Barsby, Palmer Yaremchuk, Vrin Chawla, Elwood Van Nieuwenhuyze, Odin Van Caeseele, Ayven Jakubowski, Eloise Pugong and Jackson Jewhurst danced to Let’s Twist Again and " The Twist.
The basic/novice group of Emily Prokopetz, Harper Flowers, Addilynn Hull, Charlotte Prokopetz, Arielle Eagleson and Shivin Dureja skated to Staying Alive.
Cruz Jaeb skated a solo to Working 9-5.
Novice 3 skaters Forrest Van Nieuwenhuyze, Gabby Correos, Gwen Irlandez, Lexi Keller, Ava Jewhurst and Adley Jewhurst skated to Better When I’m Dancing.
Senior and junior coaches Sage Ward, Adley Ward and Cruz Jaeb skated to Footloose.
Layla Jaeb skated a solo to the music Only Girls.
The beginner and elementary boys who skated to YMCA were Elwood Van Nieuwenhuyze, Odin Van Caeseele, Varin Chawla and Ayven Jakubowski.
The novice 2 girls Ailes Nievares and Aria Foster skated to Dancing in the Street.
The beginner and elementary girls Palmer Yaremchuk, Ava Nelson, Brynn Barsby, Eloise Pugong and Jackson Jewhurst skated to Walking on Sunshine.
Basic and novice girls Emily Prokopetz, Addilynn Hull, Arielle Eagleson, Harper Flowers and Charlotte Prokopetz skated to Can’t Stop This Feeling.
Novice 3 and extreme girls Gabby Correos, Gwen Irlandez, Adley Jewhurst, Ava Jewhurst, Lexi Keller, Katie Boucher, Pisley Boucher, Erza Parreno and Kiara Poworoznyk-Bates skated to Waka, Waka.
The extreme, junior and senior coaches Rayne Weinhandl, Hunter Flowers, Brinley Robinson, Sage Ward, Adley Ward, Georgia Van Nieuwenhuyze, Cruz Jaeb and Jayden Poworoznyk-Bates skated to Shut Up and Dance.
Novice 1, 2 and 3 boys Dylan Terrenal, Abel Eagleson, Asher Arnaiz, Kasyn Chernyk, Ian Foster, Shankh Chawla, Shiven Dureja and Forrest Van Nieuwenhuyze skated to I Like to Move It.
The grand finale featured all the skaters showcasing their final skate of the evening.
