PREECEVILLE — Jackie Guy, an award-winning performer and artist, performed for seniors and guests at the Preeceville Personal Care Home for an afternoon of music and fellowship on March 2.
“Lent is fast approaching, and I’m doing five free Care Home shows in Feb/March. There were close to 60 in total, and the lucky five winners were Norquay on Feb. 19; Yorkton on Feb. 20; Kelvingdell Lodge on Feb. 25; Balcarres on Feb. 27 and Preeceville on March 2.”
“I want people to know and my fellow musicians that although it’s great to do some acts of charity (especially during lent) I do not think artists should always play for free. They have worked hard at their craft with endless practice hours and are not only doing it because they enjoy it, but also to make a living so support your local artists,” concluded Guy.
For Guy, a five-time Saskatchewan Country Music Association award nominee, music has never been a choice but rather a calling. Guy’s father was instrumental in encouraging her passion for music, purchasing her first bass guitar while she was in the fifth grade. Her experience with the family band Young Country motivated her to form the band Long Shot while in university and later pursue a solo career following marriage and motherhood.
Guy values family, and her faith is very important to her. Having a successful career as a physiotherapist and raising seven children did not stop her from finding time to pen every song on the albums Right Where I Wanna Be, My Red Guitar, and I Did It Anyway. Songwriting is a big passion, and Guy enjoys having the opportunity to share stories and personal experiences through song. Her unique voice is a blend of Bonnie Tyler, Kelly Willis and Shania Twain.
Guy’s more notable opportunities include serving as master of ceremonies at performances for legends Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan, coveted opening spots for Sawyer Brown and Jess Moskaluke, and the creation of music videos such as the colourful, vintage-themed “A Lot Like Me”, "In a Summer", and “Bridges”, shot in Nashville, Tenn., with Dean Miller, son of country music icon Roger Miller.
“Got the One I Wanted”, Guy's latest release, is a pop country duet with Nashville producer and singer John Strandell. John lent his Dan + Shay vibe to the song’s production, adding vocals that blend beautifully with Guy's. The collaborative effort also included Canadian producer Adam Breitkreuz, and this love song balances pop and country, making it a strong addition to summer playlists.
