YORKTON – A familiar bet is back on the table as the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires prepare to meet in the first round of the SJHL playoffs.
Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle and Melville Mayor Joe Kirwan have once again agreed to a friendly wager tied to the Highway 10 rivalry. The losing mayor will be required to wear the opposing team’s jersey at their next public council meeting.
The mayors first made the bet during last year’s playoff series, when Yorkton came out on top.
“We were happy to win this wager last year, and I think Yorkton would be perfectly fine repeating that result,” Kienle said. “It is a legendary rivalry, amazing atmosphere in both rinks and with the team we have this year, it is a great time to be a Terriers fan.”
Kirwan, meanwhile, is confident Melville can turn the tables.
“Let’s just say I don’t plan on wearing a Terrier jersey for the second time,” he said. “Melville is ready for the rematch, we have a great group and we’re looking to bring the bragging rights back to Melville this year.”
Kienle said that the playoff matchup is something fans look forward to each season.
“You see the stands fill up, you see the energy in both buildings, and it really showcases how important junior hockey is to communities like ours,” Kienle said. “It’s something people rally around.”
