YORKTON — Sacred Heart High School took students to Regina and Moose Jaw on March 26-27 to compete at the annual Provincial Skills Competition. The venue was held at Sask. Polytechnic campuses and Campus Regina Public.
The competition allows students from across the province to compete in various trade and technology areas. Sacred Heart took six competitors, including Gracie Zbitniff for baking, E.J. Schoenrock for carpentry, Reneil Recana and Cody Sparwood for mechanical engineering CADD, Orland Pineda for photography and Hayes Yanke for welding.
After a long day of competition, Sacred Heart came home with two gold medals and a silver. Reneil took gold in the mechanical engineering CADD category, while Cody took the silver. They had six hours of competition time. In the first half, they were given 3D-printed parts and, using their computer software, had to re-create the parts. In the second half, they had to read blueprints and create parts while adding alterations to the plan.
E.J. won gold in the carpentry category. He had seven hours to read a blueprint, cut, build and assemble a wood project using power tools and hand tools. The project this year was a kids’ sandbox that had a lid for the sand area and a covered roof.
Both E.J. and Reneil now can represent Team Sask. at the Skills Canada National Competition. This is the second year in a row that these two students have taken gold to advance to the national competition. The competition will be held in Toronto on May 28-29 at the Enercare Centre. The competition will consist of two full days of competition against students from across Canada.
