CANORA – Members of the Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance Club travelled to Regina March 19–22 to compete at the 34th annual Tavria Ukrainian Dance Competition, bringing home an impressive collection of medals across multiple age groups and categories.
Only Senior through Intermediate 1 dancers travelled to this competition, while Novice, Junior 1, and Junior 2 dancers will take part in upcoming events later this season.
The club saw strong results in group dances, highlighted by several gold medal performances. The Senior and Intermediate 3 Hopak earned a score of 94 for gold, while the Intermediate 2 and 3 Christmas Dance also captured gold with a score of 94. Another standout performance came from the Intermediate 2 and 3 Bukovinian, which received a score of 91 for gold. Intermediate 1 dancers also had a strong showing, earning gold with a score of 91 in the Volyn.
Silver medal finishes included the Transcarpathian dance (Intermediate 3 and Seniors) with a score of 88, as well as the Volyn Girls Dance, which also earned silver with a score of 88. Several groups earned bronze, including the Senior Bukovinian (84), Intermediate 2 Poltava (84), and Intermediate 1 Poltava (84).
In solos and duets, dancers continued to impress. Maddy Dutchak and Reid Kitchen earned gold with a score of 91 for their Volyn duet, while Madison Dutchak also achieved gold in her Transcarpathian solo with a score of 91. Silver medals were awarded to Eva Romanchuk (Lyrical, 89), Hannah Dutchak and Reid Kitchen (Bukovinian duet, 87), and Danielle Dutchak (Bukovinian solo, 85).
Veselka saw a different look at this year’s competition, with a smaller group attending due to injuries and scheduling conflicts. Despite this, dancers stepped into new roles and filled positions on short notice, demonstrating adaptability, resilience, and strong teamwork. The Senior and Intermediate 3 Transcarpathian was also entered into the festival at the last minute, making their silver medal performance a particularly impressive achievement.
The club now looks ahead to an exciting end to the season. Veselka will celebrate its 50th annual concert (with one year missed due to COVID-19) on Sunday, April 26, and will also compete at the Kalyna Ukrainian Dance Festival, taking place April 30 to May 3, 2026 in Yorkton.
Veselka sincerely thanks the community for its ongoing support through fundraisers, concert attendance, and for helping to celebrate and sustain Ukrainian culture through dance.
