On the first day of the 2026 Advance Payments Program (APP) yesterday (Wed), Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) issued more than $335 million in cash advances to 1,740 farmers across Western Canada, providing early-season financing as farmers prepare for spring seeding.
Also, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced an increase in the 2026 APP interest-free limit to $250,000 for all non-canola advances.
“It’s been an especially busy start to the program year, with more applications coming in faster than we’ve seen in previous years,” says Dave Gallant, Vice-President, Finance & APP Operations at CCGA. “With higher production costs heading into spring and an interest-free limit of up to $500,000 available, many farmers are turning to the program to help manage cash flow.”
CCGA began accepting applications in late February through its early application window and will continue processing applications throughout the program year.
“With the increased interest-free limit announced today, CCGA will reassess all 2026 customer advances and reallocate the interest-free and interest-bearing portions of those advances in a way that maximizes the interest-free benefit available to eligible farmers,” says Gallant. “We’re focused on implementing the higher interest-free benefit quickly so that all farmers, including those who have already applied for or been issued a 2026 cash advance, can benefit equally.”
Each year, more than 10,000 farmers across Western Canada use CCGA cash advances to support their operations. The combination of interest-free and below-prime financing can result in significant savings compared to other forms of short-term borrowing.
Through CCGA, farmers can access up to $1 million in total financing, including:

Up to $250,000 interest-free on more than 50 eligible commodities

Up to an additional $250,000 interest-free on canola only

Interest-bearing advances at a rate of prime minus 0.25%

“For many applicants, the process takes just 15 to 20 minutes, and our team is ready to walk them through every step,” says Gallant.

The Advance Payments Program is a federal loan program administered by CCGA, providing Canadian farmers with flexible, low-cost financing to support marketing and cash flow needs throughout the year.
