A quick, expanded look around the SJHL as the semifinals heat up and the league recognizes excellence off the ice:
Humboldt Strong
As the April 6th arrives, today and every day, the victims and survivors of this tragic event remain in the hearts of all.
We all continue to extend their deepest thoughts, prayers, and sincere condolences to the families and friends of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Work is progressing at the crash site near Tisdale, where paving and accessibility improvements are scheduled for this year, following site preparation that began in 2024. A permanent monument is planned to honour those affected.
In Humboldt, Saskatchewan, plans also continue for a community recreation facility that will include tribute elements. City officials say the projects aim to create lasting spaces for reflection, healing, and remembrance as the community marks eight years since the tragedy.
Green Shirt Day is observed each April 7 to honour the victims and survivors of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, encouraging organ donation awareness and paying tribute to Logan Boulet’s legacy of giving.
Historic Streak Snapped, Bombers Respond in Style
The Weyburn Red Wings delivered one of the biggest statements of the playoffs in Game 1, shutting out the Flin Flon Bombers 2–0 on the road. Joey Rocha was outstanding with a 37-save shutout, ending Flin Flon’s remarkable 29-0-1 home record at the Whitney Forum.
But the response was just as loud. Flin Flon exploded for a 6–2 win in Game 2, led by Connor Miller (2G, 1A) and a balanced attack. It’s a clear reminder—momentum can swing fast this time of year.
Series tied 1–1 heading to Weyburn.
Terriers’ Grit vs. North Stars’ Pushback
In Yorkton, the Yorkton Terriers showed resilience in Game 1, storming back from a 2–0 deficit. Affiliate call-up Trae Peterson sparked the rally, and Jye Zawatsky capped it with the game-winner. Callum Creig was clutch, including a penalty shot stop that kept the game level.
Game 2 flipped the narrative. The Battlefords North Stars responded with a composed 3–1 win, powered by two third-period goals from Finlay Klippenstein.
It’s shaping up as a classic back-and-forth series heading to North Battleford for the next two.
Knittig Setting the Pace, Special Teams a Factor
Josh Knittig continues to be the offensive driver this postseason, leading the league with 15 points through seven games. He’s producing consistently and in key moments.
Equally important—Battlefords’ special teams.
Their penalty kill has been aggressive and opportunistic, with three short-handed goals in the playoffs and 19 combined across the season. In tight series, that edge can be decisive.
RBC Community Ambassador finalists announced
Off the ice, the SJHL continues to highlight its impact across Saskatchewan. In partnership with RBC, the league announced its Community Ambassador Award finalists: Ryder McKinnon of the La Ronge Ice Wolves, Callum Creig of Yorkton, and Connor Miller, who made his mark with the Humboldt Broncos before joining Flin Flon.
Each player has made meaningful contributions in their community—from youth mentorship to volunteer work—and represents what the league stands for beyond the game. The winner will be announced during the Canterra Seeds Cup Final.
