REGINA — The province has confirmed that Her Honour the Honourable Vaughn Solomon Schofield, former Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, has passed away following a brief time in hospital.
Solomon Schofield was Saskatchewan's 21st Lieutenant Governor, serving from 2012 through 2018. She died in Regina on April 8 following a short illness, with the announcement of her death made in a statement Thursday morning from Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre.
"I offer deep condolences to her family and friends, and to the thousands of Saskatchewan residents the former lieutenant governor touched during her time in office from 2012 to 2018," McIntyre said.
"Vaughn had a strong background in community work and volunteer service, and her dedicated support of the military was evident throughout her time in office."
McIntyre had a further personal remembrance about the former Lieutenant Governor:
"I remember Vaughn's friendly smile and cheery greeting when we would run into each other over the summer in her beloved Regina Beach. I was thrilled to be on hand to see Vaughn receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Regina last year, for which she was deservedly proud."
In a statement Premier Scott Moe paid tribute to Solomon Schofield.
"Vaughn Solomon Schofield was a wonderful embodiment of the Saskatchewan spirit," Premier Moe said. "She was Lieutenant Governor when I became Premier and I saw her dedication to the people of our province firsthand on many occasions. In particular, her decades-long commitment to our Armed Forces was steadfast and she will be missed by all who knew her…
"Krista and I join Their Honours, the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Bernadette McIntyre and Mr. Rich McIntyre, in offering our condolences to Ms. Solomon Schofield's family, including her daughter Whitney, son George, and four grandchildren," Premier Moe said.
Solomon Schofield was born in Regina and educated at the University of Saskatchewan's Regina Campus and the Rae-Vogue School in Chicago. She was President and CEO of Western Group of Companies, a business real estate organization, and was a recipient of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, the Canadian Forces Decoration and served as Chancellor of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
Prior to becoming Lieutenant Governor, she was appointed the provincial chair of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council and served as honorary Cclonel of 10 Field Artillery Regiment. She was also a recipient of the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.
The province states that during her term, Solomon Schofield had established the Lieutenant Governor's Military Service Pin distributed to over 8,000 acting or former military people who lived in Saskatchewan. She also hosted the Support our Troops Gala, a national fundraiser for charities that assisted military families. In 2025 Solomon Schofield became honorary colonel of 15 Wing Moose Jaw.
Online condolences can be sent through the official website of the Lieutenant Governor's Office, and books of condolence will be available to sign at Government House and in the lobby of the legislative building in Regina. Flags at the Legislative Assembly have been lowered to half mast and the province states it will remain that way until sunset of the day of the funeral. The province says funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
