The Saskatchewan Roughriders promised fans they would have a new head coach by the end of November.
Just hours before the last day of the month began, word got out. The Riders have come to terms with Corey Mace to be the new head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
In the end, two names seemed to float to the top of the Roughriders list as they look to rebound from back to back disappointing seasons. Corey Mace, most recently the defensive coordinator with the Toronto Argonauts, and Buck Pierce the offensive coordinator with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
In the end, the Riders went with Mace.
Mace’s stock has been rising in recent years, as he interviewed for the head coaching job in Ottawa at the end of last season, but it wasn’t to be. Now, it appears his time has come.
Mace, from Port Moody B.C., has impressed with his defensive schemes and getting the most out of the players his has helping the Argos into respectability with a 16 win season, and a birth in the CFL’s Eastern Final.
Sports Cage contributor Farhan Lalji first reported the signing on the social media platform “X”.
Mace is taking over for the departed Craig Dickenson who was not offered a new contract when the season ended.
