As the leaves crunch and the air turns cold, it’s that magical time of year again, Halloween! If you’re anything like me, you love seeing the pumpkins, decorations and costumes, but when it comes to the movies you prefer more comedic and fun ones, rather than the blood, guts and jump scare horror. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some of my favourites that are perfect for a nostalgic night in.
1. Halloweentown: You could fill your whole night watching all four Halloweentown movies! The first one follows Marnie and her siblings learning about their witchy heritage and how to control and use their powers, while saving Halloweentown and the world too. Plus with Debbie Reynolds playing the kids’ grandma, it’s definitely worth the watch!
2. Twitches & Twitches Too: Technically two movies, but come on, twin witches and sisterly bonds? Sign me up! Tia and Tamera Mowry are long lost twins who meet each other for the very first time on their 21st birthday, which just so happens to be on Halloween. You’ll be cheering for the girls as they discover their powers and try to save their home world from the forces of darkness.
3. Ghostbusters: Who you gonna call? Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the OGs (original ghostbusters) from the 80s! It’s an iconic movie that kicked off my Twinkie addiction as a kid. It’s all about the laughs, action, and a bit of slime. (Personally, I like to watch Ghostbusters 1 & 2 back to back, even though Ghostbusters 2 is technically a Christmas/New Years movie.)
4. Girl vs. Monster: This is kinda like Ghostbusters, but instead of ghosts, it’s monsters! The movie follows Skylar who learns she comes from a long line of monster hunters. When her parents are kidnapped by the monsters, it’s up to Skylar to face her newfound fears and find her parents. This DCOM combines action, music, and a feel-good story about accepting your fears but not letting them control you.
5. Hocus Pocus: It’s not Halloween without the villainous Sanderson sisters causing trouble! Staring the iconic Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the witchy trio, this movie screams 90s in the best way and it’s just a fun watch. And it was directed by THE Kenny Ortega. Need I say more?
I may be influenced a bit by nostalgia, as all these movies were a part of my childhood, but honestly they still hold up today and have all the Halloween spirit without the scares and screams. So get your favourite snacks, snuggle up on the couch, and check out these movies that will not give you nightmares. 👻
