This past week, I made a little trip to Regina to visit my parents, and as always, we kept up our favourite family tradition: heading to the IMAX for a movie night. If you haven’t been, you’ve got to check it out! It’s not just the giant screen and bespoke sound system that makes it special, but the fact that it’s a local non-profit makes it feel extra good to support. This time around, we saw the new Superman movie in 3D. I won’t lie, the 3D was seriously in your face at first (I wonder why, lol), but you get used to it pretty quickly. And honestly? The movie was way better than I expected!
One thing I really appreciated was that the story didn’t start with Clark Kent’s origin. By now, we all know how Superman came to be, so it was nice to jump right into the action. David Corenswet as Superman totally won me over. He might just be my favourite since Christopher Reeve! I also loved the way the movie paid tribute to the classic Superman films with its opening titles and credits. It was such a fun throwback for fans like me who grew up watching those movies. And of course, James Gunn (the writer and director) knows exactly how to blend serious moments with just the right amount of humour.
The Daily Planet crew had great chemistry and kept things lively, but the real stars for me were the Justice Gang. Their scenes were hilarious, and I couldn’t stop laughing at their antics. I spent half the movie trying to figure out where I’d seen the actor playing Mr. Terrific before. Turns out, he was Darwin in X-Men: First Class, but even better, he played Laurent in Twilight and New Moon! As a big Twilight fan, that was such a fun surprise!
All in all, Superman is a fantastic start to James Gunn’s DC Universe. It’s funny, heartfelt, and action-packed! (And now I’m extra excited for the upcoming Supergirl movie too!) If you’re heading to Regina, definitely check out a movie at the IMAX. It’s a great way to support the community and catch the latest blockbusters on the biggest screen around. Trust me, you’ll have a blast!
