A request to designate a historic hangar at the Yorkton Airport as a municipal heritage property is moving forward for further study.
City council has referred the proposal involving Hangar #2 to the Municipal Heritage Advisory Sub-Committee for review and recommendations. The committee will report back to council at a later date.
The request was submitted by Yorkton Aircraft Service, which owns the property.
The company noted that Hangar #2 is the last remaining structure at the site, built under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in 1940 and 1941.
The firm has maintained the hangar since acquiring it in 2016 and says restoration work is needed.
Through Saskatchewan’s Heritage Property Act, municipalities can designate properties that hold historical value to their communities.
Designation not only recognizes heritage sites but also opens access to potential financial assistance for preservation work through the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation.
City officials say there are no financial implications for the municipality since ownership and maintenance of the hangar would remain with Yorkton Aircraft Service.
The advisory sub-committee will now review the request and provide its recommendation to the council before any formal designation bylaw is considered.
