I got some great news yesterday — I don’t have to buy a new Saskatchewan Roughriders jersey this year! As a Riders fan, that’s always a win in my books. I was really happy to see the team re-sign Kian Schaffer-Baker to a two-year extension. That news made my day.
When the new obsidian jerseys came out, I picked up a Schaffer-Baker jersey hoping he’d be around for a while. If you’re a fan, you know that feeling — you commit to a player and cross your fingers that your timing is right. Unfortunately, my track record hasn’t always been great. I once bought a Corey Holmes jersey, and not long after, he was gone. That one still stings.
After that, I played it safe and bought a jersey with my last name on it. Nothing wrong with that, but honestly, I’d much rather wear the name of a player I enjoy watching and supporting on the field. There’s just something different about cheering for a guy you know is making plays every week.
Sure, I could always go with a classic name — those never go out of style — but it’s nice when your current jersey choice actually works out for once. Seeing Schaffer-Baker locked in for two more years feels like a little victory for fans like me who overthink jersey purchases.
It might only be January, but it already has me thinking about football. The CFL season really isn’t that far away when you think about it. Training camp, preseason, kickoff — it’ll be here before we know it. And when it is, I’ll be proudly wearing my Schaffer-Baker jersey, knowing at least for now, my jersey luck has finally turned around.
