Oscar nominations just dropped this week, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners broke the record for nominations with 16 nods, topping the already impressive 14 nominations held by Titanic, La La Land, and All About Eve. With so much buzz, I had to see what made this movie stand out from the crowd.
Watching Sinners was a rollercoaster! A little slow to get started but a wild ride by the end. The movie flips the script halfway through, changing tone in a way that totally fits the story but still took me by surprise. It kept things exciting and made the whole movie feel fresh and unpredictable.
What really stole the show for me, though? The music! The cast actually performed and played the instruments and what we hear in the movie is what was recorded live on set. So impressive! And Michael B. Jordan playing twins? The visual effects are so good you’d swear he has a real-life twin. That seamless acting and editing deserves at least an award or two.
While Sinners probably isn’t a movie I’ll rewatch over and over, I’m glad I checked it out. Heads up: it’s rated R, so definitely not one for a family movie night. Still I’ll be cheering for Sinners to win it all at the Oscars coming up on March 15th, since it was very good (and I also haven’t seen any of the other nominees besides KPop Demon Hunters [which I will also be rooting for]).
You can stream Sinners on Crave.
