I admit it — we have a very spoiled dog. Barkley has so many toys, chew toys, and bones that I honestly don’t think he knows what to do with them all. If there’s ever a shortage of chew options in this house, it certainly isn’t his fault.
The other day I was doing a full house cleanup, and a big part of that job is picking up Barkley’s collection. Toys under the table, a chew in the hallway, a bone by the couch… he makes sure there’s always one nearby, no matter where he decides to flop down. I gathered them all up and lined his chewies and bones neatly by the fireplace, and that’s when it really hit me — this dog has a lot of stuff.
Seeing them all in one place made me realize it might be time to downsize a bit. Some are barely used, some are clearly favorites, and some I’m pretty sure were exciting for about five minutes before being forgotten. Of course, Barkley would argue that every single one of them is essential.
The problem is saying no. Anyone with a dog knows that look. When we’re at the pet store and he locks eyes with a brand-new chew, it’s game over. That face could convince anyone that he’s never owned a toy in his life. I’m starting to think the solution might be simple — maybe I need to start going to the pet store without him.
Until then, I’ll keep picking up toys, stepping over the occasional bone, and accepting the fact that Barkley lives a pretty good life. And honestly, seeing how happy he is surrounded by his treasures makes it kind of worth it.
