The Swan Valley Stampeders are now winners of five of their last six games as they battled back to earn a 4–3 shootout win over the Selkirk Steelers on Friday night at the Swan River Centennial Arena.
After a scoreless opening period, Selkirk broke through just 58 seconds into the second when Wyatt Witham opened the scoring. The Steelers added another soon after, with Dawson Madden making it 2–0.
Swan Valley responded before the period was out. Wylie Smith cut the deficit to 2–1 with a snapshot from the point, keeping the Stampeders within one heading into the third.
The push continued in the final frame as Zach Hertz tied the game 2–2, sending a side angle shot that fooled Selkirk netminder Ethan Sawyer.
Special teams then took over as on a 4-on-3 advantage, Witham struck again to restore the Steelers’ lead at 3–2. But the Stamps answered once more on the power play, with Reis Nyland tipping one in front to knot the game at three, his first in the MJHL.
Overtime solved nothing, sending the game to a shootout. Ben Groome and Jake Giacobbo both found the back of the net, completing the comeback and securing the victory for the Stampeders.
The two teams will meet once again on Saturday night in Swan River starting at 7:00 PM.
