Can you believe January is already wrapping up? Somehow, it feels like the month raced by and dragged on at the same time! I’m still bundled up in prairie winter mode, but the thought of melting snow and blooming flowers is starting to fill my mind…just a couple more months to go. The days are gradually getting longer, and every extra minute of daylight feels like a little win over winter.
With Groundhog Day coming up on Monday, there’s always a bit of excitement about what the furry critter might predict. Shadow or not, we prairie people know the answer doesn’t really matter in the end. Experience tells us to expect at least one more deep freeze into the -30s, not including wind chill, and one or two more big dumps of snow. It’s just part of the life out here, and swapping stories about the weather is practically a local pastime.
But that’s the beauty of it all. These final stretches of cold and snow make us appreciate every sunny, warm day that’s ahead. When spring finally arrives and the prairies burst into color, it feels well-earned. Until then, we’ll embrace the cozy moments, watch the snow sparkle under the winter sun, and look forward to that magical transformation when winter finally lets go.
