The latest unemployment figures are out, and Saskatchewan’s jobless rate dropped 1.1 per cent last month, from 6.4 per cent in December, to 5.3 percent in January.
Speaking at a Feb. 6 news conference in Yorkton, Yorkton MLA David Chan says 15-thousand full-time jobs were created in the province in January, including 24-hundred in the Yorkton-Melville region, noting those job numbers saw little impact from ongoing tariff issues, which he calls a sign of the resilience of the province’s economy, and a testament to the policies put in place by the government.

The province added 15-thousand full-time jobs in January, including 24-hundred in the Yorkton-Melville region.
Chan notes the region saw an 18.1 per cent jump in the goods-producing sector and a 5.4 per cent increase in the service-producing sector.
Chan says work continues on a number of projects that will have a major impact on the economy in the region, including upgrades to Grain Millers Drive, which he describes as a key economic corridor, adding that efforts will continue when it comes to expanding local training opportunities.
Overall, Chan called 2025 a year of incredible growth for the province, noting that the number of jobs in the Yorkton-Melville region rose 9 per cent from 2024 to 2025.
