I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready to swap out the snow boots for golf shoes. There’s just something about this time of year that gets me thinking about tee times, fresh-cut fairways, and the hope—key word being hope—that this might finally be the year my golf game turns a corner.
If I’m being honest, in years past my rounds have looked less like a highlight reel and more like a scavenger hunt. I’ve spent a good chunk of time wandering through the rough, peeking into bushes, and occasionally wading into a sand trap wondering how on earth I got there. Let’s just say my golf balls tend to explore more of the course than I do.
But this year feels different. Maybe it’s optimism, maybe it’s stubbornness—but I’ve got it in my head that the only way to improve is to actually get out there more. More swings, more rounds, more chances to figure things out. Even if it means losing a few (okay, a lot) of balls along the way.
One thing that definitely helps? We’ve got some incredible courses around here. Places like Deer Park Golf Course, and normally this is the weekend they’d be opening up for the season. Of course, Mother Nature had other plans this year. With snow still sticking around, opening day is on hold—but you have to think once things warm up, it won’t take long before the fairways are calling our names again.
And then there’s the added motivation at home. My boys love getting out on the course and seem to have no problem doing it regularly. So now there’s a little friendly pressure—dad’s got to step up his game. I’m not saying I need to start shooting under par, but at the very least, I’d like to keep up… and maybe spend less time searching for lost balls than actually playing.
So here’s to a new golf season (eventually), a bit of patience with the weather, and maybe—just maybe—a few more shots that go where they’re supposed to. And if not? Well, at least I’ll get my steps in tracking down those golf balls.
