I love this time of the year. The landscape finally starts turning green again, leaves begin popping out on the trees, the grass starts growing and spring is almost in full swing. After a long winter, it feels good to see some life outside again.
Last weekend I decided it was time to get the lawn back into shape. When the snow finally disappeared, the yard looked rough. There was snow mold everywhere along with that hard, crusty layer of dead grass that winter leaves behind. Not exactly the beautiful green lawn we dream about all winter long.
I find a dethatcher works wonders this time of year. It really digs in and rips out all the nasty stuff hiding in the grass. Since I mulch my lawn most of the summer, there’s always a lot of dead grass built up underneath. I honestly couldn’t believe how much came out this year. I have a pretty small front yard and still managed to completely fill a green bin for pickup this week.
As messy as the job is, there’s something really satisfying about lawn care. Seeing the yard cleaned up and ready for a fresh start just feels good. It’s almost like the lawn gets a reset button after winter.
The work isn’t done yet either. This weekend the lawn is getting another once-over with the aerator before I throw down some fertilizer and give it a good watering. Hopefully in a few weeks the hard work starts paying off with a thick green lawn.
Now if the weather would fully cooperate and stop teasing us with random cold mornings, that would be perfect!
