If you’re planning to head to the lake for the May long weekend, you might want to pack the winter jacket along with the camping gear this year. Spring has been pretty slow to show up across parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and it definitely shows once you get outside the city.
I stopped in at Madge Lake on Monday and honestly couldn’t believe how much snow was still hanging around. In some spots it looked like winter never left. The biggest surprise though? The lake was still covered in ice. In the middle of May! That’s not exactly the picture most of us have in mind when we think of the unofficial kickoff to camping season.
From what I’m hearing and seeing online, there are still quite a few campgrounds and lakes dealing with the same thing. Some areas have muddy roads, snow in the bush, and ice that just doesn’t want to disappear. Add in the cool forecast for the long weekend and it might make for a different kind of camping trip this year.
Usually by May long we’re talking about fishing, campfires, lawn chairs, and trying not to get too much sun. This year it might be more about hoodies, rubber boots, and checking to see if the furnace works in the camper.
The good news is people around here are pretty tough when it comes to weather. A little cold and snow usually won’t stop dedicated campers from getting out and enjoying the weekend anyway. Sometimes those chilly weekends around the fire end up being the ones you remember the most.
What does it look like where you are? Still snow on the ground? Ice on the lakes? Or are you lucky enough to already be enjoying some real spring weather?
