Just a few short weeks ago it felt like summer would never get here. We were still waking up to snow, scraping windshields and wondering if the warm weather would ever finally stick around. Fast forward to this week and now we’re talking about temperatures soaring into the mid 30’s with heat warnings across the area. That’s Saskatchewan and Manitoba weather for you.
I don’t think too many people are going to complain just yet though. After the long winter and chilly spring, the heat actually feels pretty good. The sunshine and warm temperatures have finally allowed many of us to get outside and enjoy the yard again without jackets, mitts or worrying about frost overnight.
The last couple of days we finally got all of our outdoor plants and flowers planted. It’s nice to see the yard coming to life after waiting so long for spring to show up. Everything always seems to grow in a hurry once the heat arrives on the prairies.
Now the big question is whether this early heat is a sign of what’s ahead for the rest of the summer. Are we in for a hot, dry prairie summer? Only time will tell, but if this week is any indication, we better keep the sunscreen and the garden hose close by.
Personally, I’m all for it. After the cold weather hanging around so long, I’m ready for hot days, BBQs, green grass, evenings on the deck and everything else that comes with another prairie summer. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many more warm days ahead.
