Last night, I was scrolling through my streaming apps trying to find something to watch, when Snow White and the Huntsman popped up in my “Watch It Again” section. This was confusing since I have zero memory of ever watching it! Out of curiosity, I pressed play to see if anything would feel familiar, but the whole time nothing did. My best guess is that I either fell asleep while trying to watch it years ago, or someone else used my account. Still, I have to say, Charlize Theron as Queen Ravena absolutely stole the show. She brought such intensity to the role and made a truly memorable villain!
When the film first came out, it was wrapped in a bit of controversy. As a Twilight fan, it was impossible not to notice that Kristen Stewart, who starred as Snow White, was in the middle of a very public relationship with Robert Pattinson. The release of the movie also brought a scandal…an affair between Kristen and director Rupert Sanders, who was married at the time to Liberty Ross, the actress who played Snow White’s mother. The timing couldn’t have been more dramatic, right before the final Twilight movie premiered, and it all led to Kristen and Rob’s eventual breakup. Fast forward to now: Kristen is happily married to her long-time partner Dylan, while Rupert’s career has been quieter, with his 2024 remake of The Crow not exactly wowing critics.
As for the movie itself, while Snow White and the Huntsman offers a dark and action-packed take on the classic fairytale, I find myself leaning toward Mirror Mirror for a “2012 Snow White” retelling. With Lily Collins and Julia Roberts, it’s just a more colourful, lighthearted, and fun experience. Both films have their unique charm, but if you’re in the mood for a whimsical movie night, Mirror Mirror is definitely my pick!
You can stream Snow White and the Huntsman on Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video.
You can stream Mirror Mirror on Crave or free with ads on the CTV app.
