There are certain signs that summer is finally here, and one of them arrived at our house on Saturday — a trailer full of split birch firewood.
Every year I get my firewood from Raymond, just south of Yorkton. He always has great firewood and provides excellent service. Normally, we order a cord of wood, but this year when he asked if I wanted a dump trailer full, I couldn’t say no. It sounded like a great idea!
What I didn’t realize was just how much wood was going to be sitting in the back alley waiting to be stacked. Thankfully, I had some help. My wife and youngest son rolled up their sleeves and pitched in. My oldest son managed to get off the hook this time since he was working.
After a few hours of hauling, stacking, and a little bit of sweating, the woodpile is full and ready for the season ahead.
Sitting around a backyard fire is one of my favourite things about summer. There is something relaxing about watching the flames dance, listening to the crackle of birch wood, and spending time with family and friends as the sun sets. Some of the best conversations happen around a fire pit.
Now that the wood is stacked and waiting, all we need are a few warm evenings and maybe a bag of marshmallows. Summer can officially begin.
We’re ready.
