This morning started way earlier than I would have liked.
At 3:30 a.m., my youngest decided it was time to be awake. Why? I couldn’t tell you. Kids don’t seem to operate by the same rules the rest of us do.
Eventually he went back to sleep.
I did not.
And that’s the worst part, isn’t it? The kids can fall back asleep in approximately seven seconds, while you’re left staring at the ceiling wondering if there’s any point in even trying.
It’s 4:30 now, the entire house is asleep except me.
Normally I’d be grumpy about that.
But this morning has been kind of nice.
I made myself a cup of tea and I’m sitting out on the deck. The birds were already awake and carrying on like they had an important meeting scheduled. There were chirps coming from every direction. Some sounded beautiful. Others sounded like they were arguing, that’s the crows.
I’m very lucky with my backyard.
When we moved into our house 17 years ago, we moved into a neighbourhood that was already established. Yes, we have neighbours all around us, but we also have these beautiful mature trees surrounding our yard. Trees that have been growing for decades.
This time of year, it’s gorgeous.
The leaves are full, the birds are busy, and for a few quiet minutes in the morning, it almost feels like you’re somewhere completely different.
It also got me thinking about all the farms we’ve visited through Supper in the Field.
Every time we head out to a winning farm, I find myself a little jealous. The open space. The quiet. The incredible views. Being surrounded by nature instead of houses and traffic.
I can only imagine what it would be like to wake up to that every day.
That’s definitely one of the reasons why I love Supper in the Field so much.
So while I wouldn’t recommend a 3:30 a.m. wake-up call, I have to admit, this one wasn’t all bad.
