We spent yesterday at the Yorkton Exhibition Summer Fair, and it was one of those days that reminded me just how much fun summer can be… and just how much energy kids have.
We had a big group of us there, which honestly was the way to do it. The older boys took off with one of the dads to conquer the bigger rides, two of us moms wrangled the littles, and another dad was in charge of what became the MVP of the day—a giant “chariot” wagon.
Thank goodness they brought that thing.
It carried everything. Water bottles, rain jackets, bug spray, snacks, the random stuffed animals the kids just had to win, and probably a few pounds of dirt by the end of the day. Every family needs one of those wagons. It’s basically the mom purse… on wheels.
Walking around the fair brought back so many memories from when I was little. It was usually just my sister, my dad and me. We’d spend way too much money trying to win prizes that were definitely worth about three dollars, and somehow we’d convince ourselves the next game was the game.
I also remember my sister convincing me to go on the Ring of Fire.
I screamed.
A lot.
What I don’t remember is going on ride after ride after ride after ride without ever getting tired.
Apparently that’s a superpower you lose somewhere around adulthood.
The kids were unstoppable. Rides, then more rides. Food. More rides. The corn maze. More rides. Chuckwagons. More food. Then, naturally… more rides.
Meanwhile, the adults were quietly checking our watches, wondering if it was socially acceptable to call it a day before someone asked to go on the zipper one more time.
It was such a great day, though. Watching the kids light up over every ride, every game, every animal and every snack made every step worth it.
Today, however, is a different story.
I was awake at 4:00 this morning… and, naturally, my boys decided today was the perfect day to sleep until 8:00.
Isn’t that always how it goes?
My feet are sore, I’m pretty sure I ate my body weight in mini donuts, and I could probably use another weekend to recover from my weekend.
But I’d do it all again.
Although next year… I might see if the chariot wagon has room for one more passenger.
