It looks like the summer heat is here to stay for a while. Forecasts are calling for temperatures pushing into the 30s this week, and I have a feeling there will be plenty of people searching for shade and anything that can help them cool off.
Thankfully, we have air conditioning both at work and at home, so I know how lucky we are. Not everyone has that luxury, and when the heat sticks around for days at a time, it can become more than just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous.
There are plenty of simple ways to stay cool during these hot summer days. If you don’t have air conditioning, spending a little time in a shopping mall, library, community centre, or another air-conditioned public space can make a big difference. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do. Keep a water bottle close by and drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
If you’re planning to work outside, try to get it done early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun isn’t quite as intense. Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade, and don’t overdo it. And don’t forget about your pets—they need plenty of fresh water and a cool place to escape the heat too.
For me, one of the best ways to cool down is jumping in the pool with the family after work or spending the evening relaxing outside once the sun starts to go down. Summer is meant to be enjoyed, but it’s also important to take the heat seriously.
What are your favourite ways to beat the heat? Do you have a go-to summer treat, a favourite swimming spot, or maybe you just crank up the fan and enjoy an ice-cold drink? I’d love to hear your tips for staying cool this summer!
