Our family has recently been adopted by a cat. (Yes, that’s apparently the correct way to say it.) One day there was no cat, and the next there was a furry little visitor hanging around our house acting like it had always lived here. And yes I did my due-diligence.
I’ve looked on all of the lost and found sites for our area, and we are taking her to the vet on Thursday to make sure she isn’t microchipped. But this little cutie showed up skinnier than anything, with no collar, and her beautiful black coat has a brown tinge to it, which I’ve since learned could be from sun-bleaching. So I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have a home.
As I was telling my eldest sister about our unexpected new friend, she laughed and said, “Oh, you’ve been chosen by the Cat Distribution System.”
The… what?
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably never heard of it before. But for cat lovers out there, you probably already have. According to the internet—especially Reddit—the Cat Distribution System (or CDS) is the completely unofficial, totally made-up belief that cats somehow choose their humans. You don’t go looking for a cat… the cat finds you. Stray cats, lost cats, kittens that wander into your yard, or the random feline that suddenly decides your porch is now home? Congratulations. The Cat Distribution System has selected you.
Is there any science behind it? Not really. It’s more of a funny internet joke that’s grown into its own little community. People share stories about the cat that appeared out of nowhere, refused to leave, and somehow ended up sleeping on their couch six months later. Honestly, there are thousands of stories, and they’re surprisingly wholesome.
The funny part is how many of them start exactly the same way: “I don’t even like cats…” or “We weren’t planning on getting a pet…” Fast forward a few weeks, and they’re buying litter boxes, arguing over cat names, and posting photos like proud parents.
Which brings me back to our family.
We definitely weren’t looking for a cat. We certainly weren’t planning on adding another member to the household. But here we are, wondering if we’ve just become the latest recipients… or victims… of the Cat Distribution System.
This little visitor has already made up their mind, and made the decision for us.
