How would you rate the summer so far? If I’m being honest, I feel like we’ve been robbed of a normal Prairie summer.
June was pretty much a write-off with all the rain. It seemed like every time we were hoping for some sunshine, another round of rain would roll through. Then July showed up and, wow, what a difference. July was beautiful. We finally got the heat, sunshine and those long summer days we look forward to all year.
And now here we are in August, and it feels like someone turned the temperature down again.
When you really think about it, we’ve only had about one month of what I would call classic summer weather. That’s not a whole lot when you wait through a long Saskatchewan winter for those few precious months of heat.
The other thing that gets me is how quickly the days are getting shorter. I know we can still have some warm weather, and hopefully we do, but those long, hot summer days are behind us. The evenings are cooling off much quicker, and even the mornings have that little hint of fall in the air.
I’m not ready for that yet!
And don’t even get me started on the flies. Every time someone opens a door, it seems like there are twenty of them lined up waiting for their opportunity to invade the house. You open the door for two seconds and suddenly you’ve got a whole squad trying to move in.
Hopefully August surprises us and we get some more beautiful, warm summer days. I’m certainly not going to complain if September decides to give us a little extra summer.
But if I’m being honest, I’m not counting on it.
Summer always feels too short, and this year it feels like we barely got started before it began slipping away. So I’ll be soaking up every bit of sunshine I can while it’s still here. Give me a warm evening, a backyard, a campfire and a little more summer — I’m not ready to give it up just yet!
