I had the early morning drive to Foam Lake yesterday for the Combine Lotto. When I say early, I mean 4 AM early!
I love driving, but I have to admit, the older I get, the less I enjoy driving at night. There’s just something about those dark Saskatchewan roads when you’re out there by yourself. Thankfully, my wildlife encounters were pretty limited this time around. I only saw one coyote and, luckily, no deer or moose. That was definitely a bonus!
One thing I really noticed on the drive was how much I appreciated the farmers who have been out cutting the ditches for bales. By this time of year, the grass along the roads can be incredibly tall, making it difficult to see what might be hiding in there. With the ditches cut, you have a much better view of the roadside and a better chance of spotting wildlife before it gets too close to the highway.
It’s something I probably wouldn’t have thought much about before, but on a 4 AM drive, you really notice those things!
The days are getting shorter, and that means more of us will soon be doing our morning and evening drives in the dark. Whether you’re heading to work, coming home from a late shift, or just travelling down the highway, keep an extra eye out for wildlife.
Slow down, stay alert and give yourself plenty of time to react.
Stay safe out there, especially during those early morning and evening hours. You never know what might be waiting just off the side of the road.
