I will never forget where I was 25 years ago today.
September 11th, 2001 is a date that many of us will never forget. I was living in Saskatoon and going to broadcasting college when I woke up to my alarm clock and the breaking news that a plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Little did I know that was only the beginning of the chaos.
I remember going into my living room and turning on the television, watching the breaking news unfold in disbelief. At first, it was hard to comprehend what was happening. Surely this couldn’t really be happening. Then, as more information came in and the second plane hit, it became clear that this wasn’t an accident. It was an attack.
Like so many people, I sat there watching, trying to make sense of something that seemed impossible to understand. There was a sick feeling knowing that innocent people were caught in something so horrific, and my heart went out to the victims, their families and friends, and everyone whose lives were changed forever that day.
As someone studying broadcasting at the time, I also remember how surreal it was to watch and listen to such a major historical event unfold through the very medium I was learning to work in. It was one of those moments when you knew you were watching history, even though you never wanted to see history happen that way.
It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed.
A quarter of a century later, the images and memories of that day are still with so many of us. We remember where we were, what we were doing, and how we felt when the world seemed to change in an instant.
September 11th is a day to remember the lives lost, the families affected, and the many acts of courage and sacrifice that followed.
25 years later, we remember.
