The Swan Valley Stampeders picked up four points on opening weekend, finishing off a pair of wins with a 4-2 victory over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard in their MNP Home Opener Saturday night.
In front of a big Stampeder crowd, Northern Manitoba opened the scoring as Brady Green put the Blizzard ahead early. That 1-0 score held through the opening period.
Swan Valley would find the equalizer midway through the second. With the Blizzard on the penalty kill, Wylie Smith turned on the jets, took the puck to the net and beat the goaltender to make it 1-1.
The teams remained tied heading into the third, but the Stampeders took control early in the final frame.
Dylan Ruff scored on the power play to put Swan Valley ahead 2-1, giving him four goals over his last two games. Ben Groome and Trace Langan then added insurance goals as the Stampeders pulled away.
Swan Valley dominated the shot clock, firing 52 shots on goal compared to just 21 for Northern Manitoba. The Stampeders went 3-for-9 on the power play, while the Blizzard finished 2-for-6.
Elsewhere in the MJHL
The Winnipeg Blues edged the Winnipeg Monarchs 5-4 in overtime.
Steinbach doubled up Winkler 5-2.
Selkirk got past Dauphin 3-2.
Virden defeated Waywayseecappo 5-4 in a shootout.
The Portage Terriers picked up a 5-2 win over Neepawa.
