Some of the best modern sitcoms are in the format of a mockumentary: The Office, Parks & Recreation, Modern Family, etc. All those shows focused on ordinary, if not quirky, human beings. But what if the mockumentary followed non-human beings? That’s how you get my latest breakfast show* watch, What We Do In The Shadows. (*A “Breakfast Show” is any approximately 30 minute show that you can watch while eating your breakfast. It does not need to be a cartoon.)
A documentary crew follows the antics of vampires who are living in Staten Island along with their familiar, a human who is basically a butler to the vampires with an agreement that they will eventually be turned into a vampire themselves. It’s definitely an interesting watch with a lot of comedy and famous guest stars. However, since it is an FX show that means it is very much R-rated. I’d put it at about the same amount of language, gore, and sexual content as the Marvel movie series Deadpool. So absolutely don’t let the kids watch it.
We start with vampires but are eventually opened to the world of the mythical with werewolves, ghosts, necromancy, witches and more. All this makes it a perfect Halloween binge for you to watch this spooky season. (I won’t lie around season 4, it gets a little tough to watch, but they really recover in season 5.)
All-in-all, What We Do In The Shadows is a great, wacky, weird, raunchy comedy that honestly should’ve won more awards when it was on the air. The best part is the show does not end on a cliff-hanger, it’s fairly open-ended. So all the characters are in a good place, but what happens next is kinda up to the viewer, leaving the door open to revisit the series in the future. I never saw the movie it was based on but I might have to now!
You can watch the series What We Do In The Shadows on Disney+.
