Recently, I joined an online group for fellow DVD collectors and a movie that I saw a lot of people adding to their collection was John Tucker Must Die. I’ll admit, I stayed away from this movie for a long time as I thought that it was a horror movie based on the title. Turns out I was mistaken, it’s actually a teen comedy from the mid-2000s. Three girls find out they’re all dating the same guy, John Tucker, and enlist the new girl in school to help get even with him. And it’s based off a Shakespeare play? Sounds like the makings of a good movie to me!
As much as I wanted to love this movie, I just didn’t. It’s not that it was bad, I just thought that for a comedy it didn’t have a lot of comedic moments. I’m sure a lot of it was probably more funny back in 2006 when it came out, but it all fell a bit flat for me. If they made this movie now though, you know John Tucker would love the term “open relationship”. For people who are fans of the movie, you might be glad to know that there is a sequel script floating around Hollywood with the original cast, but no word on if it’s been picked up yet.
However for me, if I’m going to watch a 2006 teen comedy that’s loosely based on a Shakespeare play, filmed in Vancouver and has “Dirty Little Secret” by The All-American Rejects featured in the soundtrack, I’m going with She’s The Man every time. And if you want to see some girls get revenge on a cheater who really deserves it, watch Do Revenge. That’s some real revenge and the movie has a such a fun aesthetic with its sets, wardrobe and dialogue. Keep in mind it is rated TV-MA, so it goes a little further past the PG-13 language and antics of the other two movies.
Whichever movie you end up picking, you’ll be in for an interesting watch. Heck, pull a John Tucker and go with all three of them!
